Rain on Window

(acrylic & oil on canvas paper, 9 x 12)

My first grown-up review

I've been dabbling in music writing for almost 20 years. My end-of-year reviews are kind of like those awful Christmas letters your weird relatives send you boasting about their awful children's so-call accomplishments. I was a newswriter for a while on a pretty well-known music website, but I never made it to the big leagues of being a reviewer. I still read all the music sites every day, and I sometimes have mean thoughts about some of the writing, which may or may not be prompted out of envy and spite because I'm not in the club. But I recently saw a call for music writers on one of the more reputable sites and I thought, "What the hell, why not send them some stuff and see what happens?" So I did and they asked me to contributed some articles. I did a few singles reviews, but this week I finally finished my first full-length album review for publication, and today it was published. It was a nerve-wracking experience from start to finish, but I kept telling myself not to be afraid and to keep going, all the while being mindful of avoiding cliche and platitude if at all possible.

So here it is, my first "proper" review. I'll still post my own reviews here of stuff that I don't get the chance to write about "publicly," but this is an exciting development.
